Credit Transfer and Prior Learning

Click on the following titles to go directly to that section:

Nunavut Arctic College sometimes allows credits awarded by other post-secondary institutions, or real world work experience, to count toward completion of your Nunavut Arctic College program.

A Transfer Credit is the awarding of Nunavut Arctic College course credits for credits previously earned or which you hope to earn from another post-secondary institution.

A Challenge Credit is the award of a credit for previous work and/or educational experience.

You may submit an Application for Transfer Credit form or a Request for Challenge Credit form with your application to a Nunavut Arctic College program, or after you are registered. However, credits will be granted only once you are registered in a NAC program.

Grades received on Transfer Credits appear on transcripts, but do not count toward grade point averages. Grades may be given on Challenge Credits if the successful challenge is based on measurable criteria such as exam marks. If a grade is awarded for a Challenge Credit, the grade will appear on your transcript and count toward your grade point average.

All decisions regarding the award of Transfer Credits and Challenge Credits are final./p>

Transfer Credit
Any student who has completed the equivalent of a Nunavut Arctic College course at another institution and attained a grade of at least 60 per cent may apply for Transfer Credit. Nunavut Arctic College has a variety of credit transfer arrangements with other institutions and organizations, which are reviewed on an ongoing basis. These agreements identify equivalent NAC and partner-institution courses. Note the "Transferable Credits" section of individual program descriptions in the Academic Calendar for more information. To apply for transfer of credit, you must:
  • arrange to have an Official Transcript of marks sent directly to the registrar by your previous institution
  • obtain, from your previous institution, course outlines for the course(s) in question, including the criteria on which students were evaluated (i.e. exams, interviews) and
  • submit the course outline(s) and an Application for Transfer form to the registrar.

Students enrolled in a NAC program who are considering enrolling in another institution's course as a possible Transfer Credit should speak with the chairperson of their program before enrolling. Additional information on Transfer Credits is available in section C.16 of the Policies and Procedures Manual, or can be obtained from the Senior Instructor of the College program of interest.

Challenge Credit

You may be eligible for Challenge Credit(s) if you have work and/or educational experience similar to those of the exit standards of the course(s) being challenged. Whether or not one or more Challenge Credit(s) are awarded will be based on an interview, exam, or other criteria. NAC courses that are not eligible for Challenge Credit are identified in program descriptions. More information on Challenge Credits is available in section C.17 of the Policies and Procedures Manual. To apply for one or more Challenge Credits, print out the Request for Challenge Credit form and submit it to the registrar.

  • Challenge Credit: Challenge credit provides an opportunity for a student to demonstrate that s/he has the knowledge / skills based on the objectives of a specific Nunavut Arctic College course outline by successfully completing the appropriate challenge exam;
  • Equivalency: An equivalency is granted when an individual has provided documentation that a previous learning activity for which recognition has been granted by another approved program is similar to the course objectives of an approved Nunavut Arctic College course.
  • Portfolio: A portfolio is the collection of materials which is submitted by a student for evaluation. It may contain documents of past experience and accomplishments relevant to the learning objectives of an approved Nunavut Arctic course.
