Three times in the past 125 years, scientists from around the globe have come
together to organize coordinated scientific research and exploration programs in
the polar regions. Each program came to be known as a “polar year” and involved
an intense period of cooperative research and observation providing a snapshot
in time of the state of the polar regions, resulting in major new scientific
discoveries and breakthroughs fundamentally changing how science is conducted in
the polar regions. Canada has participated in each of the three previous polar
years.
The next International Polar Year (IPY) 2007-2008 officially begins on March 01,
2007 and will involve a 24 month program of coordinated research focused on
Arctic and Antarctic regions. Scientists from 67 countries will employing new
research technologies to carry out a broad range of cooperative scientific
studies that will greatly improve our understanding of conditions and changes
occurring in the polar regions and their influence around the globe. IPY 2007-08
will leave a legacy of improved research capacity and new scientific
information, and will help train a new generation of polar scientists both in
the North and around the world.

Recognizing that the success of IPY 2007-08 in Canada will depend upon having
committed and capable people in the North who are specifically part of the
Canadian IPY program and activities, the Canadian Federal Program Office for IPY
established interim northern IPY nodes in Nunavut, NWT, Yukon and Nunavik. The
interim IPY Node for Nunavut is currently hosted by the NRI. Jamal Shirley, NRI
manager of research design, serves as the interim Nunavut Node Coordinator.
