Apprenticeship Housing Maintainer Levels 1 to 3
About the Program:
The term of apprenticeship for an HMS consist of three 12-month periods that include a minimum 1,560 hours on-the-job training and 8 weeks (240hrs) technical training each year.
The Apprenticeship HMS program is a trade that is recognized in the Nunavut and NWT only. Apprenticeship technical level 1 – 3 programs aim to provide students with skills, knowledge and confidence to continue to become a certified Journeyman HMS. Students will train with a variety of tools, techniques and materials in well-equipped shops. Trades specific Math and Sciences form part of the apprenticeship courses.
Program delivery integrates Guiding Principles of Inuit Qaujimaningit and recognizes the value of collaborative learning unique to Nunavut.

CURRICULUM
Level 1 to Level 3 HMS apprenticeship programs are based on the NWT curriculum and delivered in accordance to Territorial standards. The delivery is designed to provide seamless transition with jurisdictions that follow NWT’s apprenticeship curriculum.
Admission Requirements:
Admission to apprenticeship programs are made with the Department of Education through the assistance of Career Development Officers. The HMS apprenticeship technical training is only available to Registered Apprentices and placement into the program is made through their regional Career Development Officer.
Record of Achievement:
Apprentice level exams are invigilated by the Department of Education and advancement is administered by the Registrar of Apprenticeship. Passing a level exam qualifies for advancement to the next level along with on-the-job training.
Student Funding and Financial Assistance:
Varying funding arrangements may apply to different apprentices, depending on conditions of their employment agreements with the employer.
Attending apprenticeship programs may require students to receive Employment Insurance, remain on their employer’s payroll and/or be subject to Tuition and Book fees.
Registered apprentices should contact their regional CDO’s and plan for the financial adjustments while attending technical training.
Credit Transfer Opportunities:
Transferable credits are limited and are subject to regulatory requirements established to meet Apprenticeships and Interprovincial standards.
Employment Opportunities:
Major employers in Nunavut are typically with the Territorial and Local Governments, primarily within the following Departments:
- Community & Government Services•
- Nunavut Housing Corporation; and•
- Local Housing Authorities (LHO’s)•
