Inuit Language and Culture

About the Program:

The Language & Culture Program provides post-secondary training in both Inuktitut language and culture. After completion of the required core courses, students will be able to choose to enter an option area which best fits their interests.

The program is designed to help students wishing to pursue an interpreter/translator career acquire and develop skills necessary in the field. The first year places special emphasis on language development, communication skills and the technical skills necessary in the interpreter/translator profession.

The second year is designed to assist the student to further develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required as an interpreter/translator. Emphasis will be placed on helping the learner acquire specialized vocabulary in technical areas, and on consecutive and simultaneous interpreting.


Admission Requirements:

Applicants must:

  • Have Grade 10, English as determined by College Entry Assessment Test, GED Equivalent, ROA in
  • Humanities or eligible for mature student admission;
  • Submit a letter of interest explaining why applicant wishes to enter the program;
  • Submit three letters of reference;
  • Have oral fluency in English and Inuktitut. Preference will be given to students literate in Inuktitut.

Applicant Assessment

  • Students will be required to write an English/Inuktitut language proficiency test;
  • Personal suitability will be assessed through an interview with program personnel;
  • All applications are subject to review by the admissions committee.

Record of Achievement:

RECORD OF ACHIEVEMENT

  • Certificate in Translation (after one successful year, full-time studies).
  • Diploma in Interpretation and Translation (after two years successful, full-time studies).

Employment Opportunities:

Graduates of the programs can expect to find employment in both the public and private sectors. While program completion does not ensure employment, graduates do have more options.
