Apprenticeship Plumber (Gasfitter) – Levels 1 & 2

The apprenticeship training term for a Plumber consist of four 12-month periods that includes 1,560 hours of on-the-job training, and for  Nunavut, 10 weeks technical training per year.

The Apprenticeship Plumber (Gasfitter) program is an Interprovincial (Red Seal) designated trade. Apprenticeship technical level 1 & 2 programs aim to provide students with skills, knowledge and confidence to continue to become a certified Journeyman Plumber. Students will train with a variety of tools, techniques and materials in well-equipped shops. Trades specific Math and Sciences form part of the apprenticeship courses.

Program delivery integrates Guiding Principles of Inuit Quajimaningit and recognizes the value of collaborative learning unique to Nunavut.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Admission to apprenticeship programs are made with the Department of Education through the assistance of Career Development Officers.

The Plumber apprenticeship technical training is only available to Registered Apprentices and placement into the program is made through their regional Career Development Officer.

FUNDING SOURCE & ALLOWANCES

Varying funding arrangements may apply to different apprentices, depending on conditions of their employment agreements with the employer.

Attending apprenticeship programs may require students to receive Employment Insurance, remain on their employer’s payroll and/or be subject to Tuition and Book fees.

Registered apprentices should contact their regional CDO’s and plan for the financial adjustments while attending technical training.

CERTIFICATION

Apprentice level exams are invigilated by the Department of Education and advancement is administered by the Registrar of Apprenticeship.  Passing a level exam qualifies for 240 hours of credit towards advancement to the next level.

TRANSFERRABLE CREDITS

Transferable credits are limited and are subject to regulatory requirements established to meet Apprenticeships and Interprovincial standards.

CAREER OPTIONS

Major employers in Nunavut are typically with the Territorial and Local Governments, primarily within the following Departments:

  • Community & Government Services
  • Nunavut Housing Corporation; and
  • Local Housing Authorities (LHO’s)

Additionally:

  • The private sector is a very active employer, providing plumbing services to the above agencies and to homeowners in Nunavut

CURRICULUM

Level 1 and Level 2 Plumber apprenticeship programs are based on the Alberta curriculum and delivered in accordance to Interprovincial (Red Seal) standards.  The delivery is designed to provide seamless transition with jurisdictions that follow Alberta’s apprenticeship curriculum.
