Pre-Trades Preparation

Pre-trades is an academic trades preparation program that is offered over an 18 week period. The Pre-trades courses provide the necessary training that is required to build skills in Math, Science and English to successfully challenge the Department of Education’s Trades Entrance Exams, Levels 1 through 5. The program aims to provide the basis to enter into an Apprenticeship, or to pursue other Arctic College programs.

Students will get an opportunity to explore the different careers that are available in trades, and build a positive learning experience, as well as developing a solid attitude towards work. Participants will be introduced to concepts in Prior Learning, Assessments and Recognition while exploring their fields of interest. This program area integrates Guiding Principles of Inuit Qaujimaningit and recognizes the value of collaborative learning styles unique to Nunavut.

Admission Requirements:

In order to enter this program, applicants must have the following education:

  • Grade 10 or a documented ABE equivalency
  • Submit three (3) letters of reference
  • Submit a letter of interest for enrollment

Or, as Mature Student:

  • Must be a minimum of 18 years old and have been out of school for at least one school year
  • Candidates may also apply for Prior Learning
  • Assessments and Recognition for admission

Additionally:

  • A placement test in Math and English will be required for all students entering this program
  • Full participation requires individuals to be physically capable of performing the work

Student Funding and Financial Assistance:

Application is made directly to a CDO or other student funding providers within your regions. Allowances for students in this program may be available through regional organizations that are involved labour market training agreements.

Credit Transfer Opportunities:

On completion of the Pre-trades program students may be eligible to transfer credits towards other approved College programs.

Employment Opportunities:

Major employers of apprentices and tradesmen in Nunavut are typically with Territorial, Local Governments, mining and construction industry.

Passing the Trades Entrance Exam allows you to register as an apprentice. For more information, please contact the regional Career Development Officer (CDO) at the Department of Education.
