Introductory Mine Training

Introductory Mine Training provides participants an introduction into mine operations and safe work habits, delivered over a 14 week period. The program provides the necessary foundation that is required to build up your skills in Math, Sciences and English required for seeking out entry level positions into the mining industry. The program will develop basic knowledge of standard terminology and practices used in the mining and the milling of minerals.

Students will also be provided an opportunity to explore the different careers that are available in mining. Participants will be introduced to concepts in Prior Learning, Assessments and Recognition while exploring their fields of interest in mining. This program integrates Guiding Principles of Inuit Qaujimaningit and recognizes the value of collaborative learning styles unique to Nunavut.

Admission Requirements:

In order to enter this program, applicants must have the following education:

  • Grade 10 or a documented ABE equivalency
  • Submit three (3) letters of reference
  • Submit a letter of interest for enrollment

Or, as Mature Student:

  • Must be a minimum of 18 years old and have been out of school for at least one school year
  • Candidates may also apply for Prior Learning Assessments and Recognition for admission

Additionally:

  • A placement test in Math and English will be required for all students entering this program
  • Full participation requires individuals to be physically capable of performing the work

Student Funding and Financial Assistance:

Application is made directly to a CDO or other student funding providers within your regions.

Allowances for students in this program may be available through regional organizations that are involved labour market training agreements.

Credit Transfer Opportunities:

On completion of the Introductory Mine Training program students may be eligible to transfer credits towards other approved College programs, including the Certificate Level, Mine Industry Trades Access program.

Employment Opportunities:

The student will have a wide range of entry into employment opportunities in the mining industry throughout Nunavut and the rest of Canada.

This program enables graduates to seek start-up positions in mining operations safely and with a keen awareness of employment opportunities.
