Hairstylist

The Hairstylist Program is a two year diploma program with a Certificate exit option after the first year. It prepares students for employment as hairstylists and to manage their own salons.

Year One is an entry-level program in hairstyling that provides training in the basic manipulative skills, safety judgements, proper work habits and desirable attitudes to obtain licensure and for competency in entry-level positions in hairdressing or related career fields. The student will learn the latest techniques in Hair Cutting, Hair Styling, Hair Perming, and will be introduced to Hair Colouring, Proper Sanitation, Hygiene, and Hair Chemistry. A Hairstylist Certificate is awarded after the successful completion of year one

In year two, students build on the work of the first year as they continue to develop skills in the trade and to learn how to operate a hairdressing business. Year Two includes a review of the latest techniques in Hair Cutting and Hair Styling; they will also reinforce Hair Perming, Hair Coloring, proper sanitation, Hygiene and Hair Chemistry. Students are introduced to Salon Management, Bookkeeping, Reception and Retail, Introduction to Manicure, Make-up, and Hair removal. A Hairstylist Diploma is awarded after successful completion of Year Two.

Admission Requirements:

Applicants wishing to apply to this program require:

  • Grade 10 or equivalent or achieved mature student status
  • Artistic ability
  • Positive attitude to working and communicating with others

In the absence of the listed entrance requirements, the Nunavut Arctic College Placement test may be required.

Record of Achievement:

Certificate in Basic Hairdressing after one year-(30 credits) OR Hairstylist Diploma after two years (60 credits)

Student Funding and Financial Assistance:

Funding for this program is supplied through contributions from the Government of Nunavut. Students may be eligible for Financial Assistance for Nunavut Students through the Department of Education.

Credit Transfer Opportunities:

Some courses may be transferrable to other Arctic College programs. Contact the Registrar’s office for more information.

Employment Opportunities:

Graduates will be prepared to work in entry level positions in hair dressing salons or for self-employment.
