Students have a wide range of options when choosing their program. From two-year, full-time programs to short non-credit courses, Arctic College has something for everyone.

Full-time or Part-time?

To be considered a full-time student in a Certificate, Diploama or Trades Program, you must be enrolled in at least 3 full courses - 60 per cent or more of a full course load.

If taking less than 3 courses per semester you are considered a part-time student.

Note: Students sponsored by FANS (Financial Assistance for Nunavut Students) must be enrolled as full-time students in a credit program to be eligible for assistance.

General descriptions of your program choices appear below. For a listing of specific courses available during the 2009-2010 Academic year, look in the Programs & Courses section of this web site.

Trades Programs

Trades Programs can be either credit or non-credit, and can be taken either full-time or part-time. There are three types of Trades Programs:

  • Introductory Trades Programs are designed to teach the basic skills of a trade with no transfer to courses to trade certification.
  • Pre-Trades Preparation programs provide academic upgrading to help students prepare to write the apprenticeship trades entry exams.
  • Pre-employment Programs provide instruction in theory and basic skills at the First Year Apprenticeship level. Applicants must write the Trades Entrance Examination and obtain a minimum of 65 per cent to be admitted. Apprenticeship Programs include training for apprentices delivered in cooperation with the Apprenticeship Division of the Department of Education.

Certificate and Diploma Programs

Certificate and Diploma Programs at Arctic College are credit programs that can be taken either full-time or part-time, and include everything from Information Technology and Jewellery and Metalworking, to Community Health Representative and Nunavut Teacher Education.

  • Certificate Programs: Certificate programs are generally delivered over the period of one academic year of full-time study. They normally include a sequence of 10 courses, and sometimes include a practicum/internship component.
  • Diploma Programs: Diploma programs are generally delivered over the period of two academic years of full-time study. They normally include a sequence of 20 courses, and sometimes include a practicum/internship component.

Career Development

Short-term skills development programs are developed and delivered through NAC in response to training requirements of an identified employment sector, such as the Inshore and Offshore Fisheries program or the Customer Service Training program. These programs are usually less than six months in length.

Academic Studies Programs

Academic Studies Programs are made up of a range of courses designed to help students learn or relearn skills needed to meet employment, personal or educational goals, and can be taken full-time or part-time. From upgrading courses in math, English and science in the Adult Basic Education (ABE) program, to Northern Skills Development courses such as Life Skills and Traditional Knowledge -- Academic Studies Programs provide an excellent foundation to prepare for further education and the workplace.

Credits

Credit courses in approved Certificate, Diploma and Trades programs are normally 45 contact hours, and are assigned three credits toward completion of a program. One credit is equivalent to 15 contact hours.

Non-credit courses are courses for which the College does not award a formal credit. These courses vary in length.

Continuing Education

The Continuing Education department offers customized training, personal development and general interest courses, plus part-time academic courses providing credit towards full-time Certificate and Diploma credentials. Continuing Education refers to any credit or non-credit course or program NAC offers on a part-time basis outside of the regular daily schedule -- typically evenings or weekends. The majority of offerings are courses or workshops of a personal interest, such as Introductory Spanish, Thai Cooking etc., but others may be credit courses such as Basic Accounting, Introductory Inuktitut etc.
