Community Health Representative

The Community Health Representative (CHR) Certificate Program is designed to assist CHR graduates to develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to promote, protect and enhance the health and well being of the people of Nunavut.

The program is based on the beliefs, guiding principles and objectives of Pinasuaqtavut and the mission and principles of the Department of Health and Social Services of Nunavut. Guiding principles of the program include being:

  • People oriented: all activities and content of the program will support an approach that places people first;
  • Culturally sensitive: the values, knowledge, beliefs and cultural distinctiveness of the people of Nunavut are integrated throughout the program;
  • Health promotion-oriented: program content and activities support the promotion of physical, social, spiritual and mental well being of individuals;
  • Capacity building: recognizing and building the strengths of individuals, families and communities will strengthen Nunavut;
  • Self-responsibility and accountability: individuals are responsible for their own well being.

Upon successful completion of the program the student will:

  • Demonstrate appropriate and effective communication skills;
  • Know what health promotion resources are available, how to use them and where to access accurate information on health and wellness topics;
  • Be able to effectively plan, prepare and present health promotion information to individuals and groups;
  • Understand the role of the CHR within the Department of Health and Social Services of Nunavut and in relation to Pinasuaqtavut;
  • Demonstrate the capacity for responsible decision making and accountability for own well being and lifestyle choices;
  • Recognize that learning is a lifelong process and that respect for individuals is the basis of effective learning and a healthy workplace (Bathurst Mandate 1999);
  • Demonstrate the ability to appropriately schedule work activities and carry them out with an appropriate amount of independence within the team;
  • Know needs identification and appropriate intervention processes.
