Adult Basic Education includes six levels of study ranging from basic literacy to course work at the Grade twelve level. Courses in this program enable participants to learn or relearn skills needed to meet employment, personal or educational goals.
The Certificate in Adult Education prepares learners to be College Educators and trainers. Participants have opportunities to demonstrate their ability to facilitate adult learning in a variety of settings with special emphasis on teaching in Nunavut. The Certificate focuses on providing the basic skills and knowledge of the techniques, methods and philosophy of adult education grounded in the Learning and Teaching Principles adhered to by Nunavut Arctic College.
The College Foundation Program offers students the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to be successful in a post secondary program. It will assist students to attain the necessary academic prerequisites for college programs in areas such as math, science, and communications and to enhance the Essential Skills that are applicable to all occupations. In addition, this program supports students by including services ranging from college orientation, study skills, tutoring, counseling (academic, personal, career advice), portfolio development, and work experience while gaining academic qualifications.
This program is designed to train students to work with children from infancy to the age of six, in day care centres, nursery schools, schools or as operators of their own day care homes. Emphasis is placed on the preschool years. It offers a balance between the classroom discussion, lectures, practical training and provides the opportunity for students to develop teaching materials and guidance skills.
The Instructor Development Program is offered in partnership with the University of New Brunswick (UNB) to college instructors and adult educators at Nunavut Arctic College. Although preference will be given to College employees, it is also open to other people who are interested in career development in the field of adult education. Completion of the program or parts of it may be a term of hire for some employees.
The Nunavut Teacher Education Program (NTEP), in partnership with the University of Regina, offers a campus and community based program prepares Nunavummiut to become classroom teachers in Nunavut schools. The emphasis is on training primary and elementary teachers, but students may choose to practice at the Junior High and High School levels. The program has a strong focus on practice, and the theory learned in courses is applied in classroom situations through observation and teaching.
