Municipal Government Certificate Program

Nunavut Municipal Training OrganizationThe Municipal Government Certificate Program is a professional development program intended to provide graduates with a foundation of municipal government principles and practices that will assist them in their current or future areas of employment.

The program will focus on enhancing the knowledge and skills of students from a municipal government perspective. The program has been designed to provide on-going learning and recognition for municipal staff and others who are interested in pursuing positions within municipal government operations.

The program includes seven specialized streams, including Assistant Senior Administrative Officer, Municipal Finance Officer, Municipal Office Administrator, Community Land Administration, Community Economic Development Officer, Recreation Leader and Municipal Works Foreman.

Successful completion of the program will enable participants to undertake their work in a manner that will build community capacity.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants wishing to apply to this program must:

  • Have a minimum level of Grade 10 English, or ABE English 130 (equivalencies will be considered)
  • A strong interest in the area of municipal government demonstrated by a 1 - 2 page letter of intent
  • A letter of support from their supervisor (for Municipal employees)

DURATION

Duration Varies according to established program and course delivery schedules.

RECORD OF ACHIEVEMENT

A “Record of Achievement” (ROA) will recognize successful completion of the five core courses. A Municipal Government Certificate will be awarded upon successful completion of the five core courses as well as five specialty courses (ten courses in total).

TRANSFER CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES

Many of the ten courses will also be transferable to one of several existing NAC Diploma Programs. Please check with each campus Registrar for more information.

STUDENT FUNDING AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

As this is a part-time program students are not generally eligible for student allowances. Students should check with their employer or designated funding agencies for confirmation.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Graduates of the program can expect to find employment in municipal government or other public sectors. As the Core courses apply to all specialties, it provides
transferable skills to any employment opportunity.
